I say Salmon like Kellie from American Idol
This is seriously something that baffles me and makes me laugh at the same time. I must admit that I pronounce the word salmon like Kellie Pickler from American Idol does. It’s just a part of my normal Southern accent.
Personally, I don’t think there is anything wrong with my accent and I don’t think it makes me sound dumb or uneducated. However, I’m sure many people would disagree with that based on first impressions and stereotypes.
Anyway, I love my accent and am very comfortable with it! What’s even more wonderful is that where I’m from all the guys sound like Matthew McConaughey. How cool is that?
All in all the part that baffles me is why do people automatically assume you are an idiot or less than them based on your Southern accent?

I must say I love southern people and dont think they are idiots. However kellie from american idol is so playing the "JESSICA SIMPSON" dumb blonde. What was it 2 weeks ago when she said to a questions asked to her about how she thinked this week went "My eye lashes are better" She then let everyone know that a PICKLE was in the crowd. It made me smile its not everyday you talk about eye lashes on American Idol.
I love a southern accent. I don't think it sounds dumb. I think the new england accent makes people sound dumber than a southern one. Besides, Matthew....sigh
Yeah....after watching it tonight, she reminds me of Jessica Simpson...when I think back and put it all together. This was the first night I thought she did one of the best performances though. I also pronounce salmon with a L.
I don't think southerners are idiots due to the accent. I do wonder, though, why everyone says Minnesotans have an accent. I've always believed we have a lack of an accent!
Thanks for visiting earlier. I'll be back!
I have a serious southern accent [being from La.!] and I get picked on a lot!
lol, oh the things I've heard about us southerners! We go everywhere barefoot, have mullets & no teeth, eat "tater salad" for breakfast, lunch and dinner and are inbred.. I could go on for days. It's simply amusing! Closemindedness [I think I just made that up, lol] will get the best of them.
I just LOVE the southern accent! I think it stinks what people think.
We need some audio on this thing!! :)
I don't assume people are idiots b/c of their southern accent unless it is coupled with bad grammar and dangling participles:)) I'm kidding...you know that right?
It is sort of similar to how I assume British people are smart because of their accents and their wider-than-American's vocabulary.
God, now I sound really dumb.
Ouch! I'm from New England :( I don't think I have an accent at all - in fact, I wish I did, but sadly, it's not there. I don't pronounce my r's to sound like "aaah's", but I have many friends that do. So yeah, I can see where people would say NE has a dumb sounding accent. However, we don't all talk like that.
In my opinion, southern accents are absolutely lovely. I think they're the best of all accents! I love the way the accent sounds, it's very soothing :) Don't let the jerks that assume anything about you get to you - they're probably just jealous that they don't sound as good as you do!!!
I don't think it is her accent. I think it is the way she acts. She acts like a dumb blonde (I am blonde) and she probably isn't dumb. There is nothing wrong with an accent. One of the reasons I fell in love w. my husband was his CT/NY accent....
When I hear a southern accent I don't think dumb, I think polite. Most of the people I have met with a southern accent have been so nice. It reminds me that's it's ok to let someone in front of me in line once in a while.
I don't consider myself having an accent, but I'm sure I do to someone. I think I'm one of only a few people who actually pronounce orange with the "or" sound not the "ar" sound.
Amanda, we have the same accent I think. Except I leave the l out in salmon. I have had people comment on my accent before and I acted like it didn't bother me. But, it really does. I really hate when I am having to talk to someone on the phone that I don't know and they don't understand what I am saying. That really bugs me because I feel like screaming I'M NOT SPEAKING ALIEN PEOPLE!
you go girl! we southerners get a bad rap on the accent thing. i say salmon too and that's not likely to change. hey there's an "L" in there!!! lol! and matthew, there's no better than that!
I'm sure it's not just Southern people who pronounce salmon like that. I love your accent and I'm sure a lot of other people do too!
Hey ~
I'm not a huge fan of the Southern Accent - although I do make exceptions :) I don't like the Philly accent (where I'm from) either.
As for the southern accent, I think it's frustrating (at least for me) because I have a really hard time understanding what people are saying sometimes...

Technically speaking, pronouncing “Salmon” with the "L" is not a matter of accent; it is incorrect pronunciation. The reason that people mispronounce the word is because they are uneducated (on the pronunciation of that word).
I am from the South, so I am not against the southern accent, but I wish that Southerners would expend more effort into pronouncing their words correctly. No reason to continue to err when you have been educated in the proper pronunciation.
