Anyone Got Any Moving Tips?

We’ve been living in university housing for 1 ½ years while the hubs went ( and continues to go) to grad school. We are finally moving out and into an older 3 bedroom home in a few weeks. Our new home is located in the center of this small town and university less than one mile from where we currently are. We live in the middle of a national forest so seeing a stray deer is not uncommon in this small town. I figured I'd throw that in there to give all of you out there an idea on what kind of town we live in. I do have to admit, however, that it is beautiful and a perfect place to raise kids despite it's shortcomings.

Anyway, the hubs will finish up school in December and will hopefully get a full time job at the university soon after while working on his PHD so we will be here for a while.

It seems like we have moved a lot in the past few years and I know it has to be confusing for our children. I’m just glad we have found a nice place to live and I’m glad it’s not an apartment. We will finally have privacy again, our own yard, our own laundry room (yay for clean clothes without needing 100 quarters) and lots of space. Plus I will be able to decorate and paint any way I want to.

However, I dread the actual moving because we will probably not have anyone to help us out and we can’t afford to hire a moving company. As I said above, we are moving less than a mile away but it’s still going to be hard with two kids in tow.

I have already taken everything off the walls and have started boxing lots of stuff up. We are going to try and get everything boxed up before the move so we won’t be so rushed and unorganized. There are so many things I need to get done plus I also have to plan my son’s 2nd birthday party. So if you have noticed I haven’t been around as much then you know why… I should be back to normal by July…and I might actually get caught up by September.

Any tips on helping moving day go more smoothly?

If you could have someone watch the kids, that would help! lol If we were moving again, I would try to put things away as soon as I took it in that way you don't have to move everything in and then have a ton of boxes sitting around.

LIST LIST LIST

I'm the queen of lists. Make a list of things you need up until you walk out the door.

Then make a list of things you need but can be packed away 1-2 days before the move.

Then make a list of things that can be packed away early.

hehe My husband has his phd and we have moved a lot but long distance.

In town....I am assuming you have a truck of some sort. Pack the kids rooms and the kitchen first and take it to the new place. Almost 2 is a cool age. Give him a box that has nothing breakable and let him go wild packing. You (since you are the organizer) stay at the new house and start unpacking with the kids (maybe your older one can go with Dad??) Your husband will be stuck with a lot of the labour packing the boxes into the truck, but you can help him once it arrives at the new house.

Even one more person would help. However when we moved to California we didn't have anyone. Becca was just one and I put her in a back carrier and helped out as much as I could and did most of the unpacking.

Not sure if your kids watch tv but that would be another thing to bring to the new house early. Or have your older boy "watch" the younger (give him jobs so he is part of the move) in the new backyard.

We are finishing up a move like that now - with four small kids.

Tips:
Prepare as much in advance as you can.
Get a uhaul.
Take all the time you can.
Bribe the neighbors with Pizza.
See if you can find an hourly laborer (undergrad student, etc.) to help with the heavy stuff.

My number one tip is to hire someone to clean the old apartment. It was worth every penny to me. I tried to clean but with a young child I was getting nowhere so I gave up and hired someone. It took so much pressure off of me. I am going to do the same next time we move because it was so nice not having to worry about that.

Make sure you label all boxes with the contents and what room they're going into.

I've still got unlabled boxes in the garage that I have no idea what's inside. I had our children and cat accounted for, so after that I gave up.

Moving tips.....
I'm a military wife and have gone from one end of the earth to the other, so you'd think I had some.
I would say to lighten the load as much as possible with a yard sale, if possible. Don't be afraid to throw things away that you forgot you had and haven't used in a while, so therefore don't miss it.
I hope it goes well!

I agree with sweats. I so hate to move and see in my future. I'm moving in July.
