Losing First Tooth: What is the Going Rate?
What? Why, yes I'm posting more than once today because it's sort of an emergency.
My 5 year old son's tooth is loose and I kind of want to talk about it. I'm pretty sure it's going to fall out soon like tonight or tomorow. I hope it's not tonight because the toothfairy wants to get him a little gift since it's his first tooth.
Right now he's kind of anxious. He keeps wiggling his tooth and I know the prospect of it hurting is unsettling to him. The fact that it's his first tooth and this is something that will never happen again makes me want to do something special for him other than slip 2 quarters under his pillow. A few quarters must have been the going rate when I was a child. That's what I remember getting and although at the time getting fifty cents was quite exciting to me I don't think fifty cents is going to be that wonderful to my son in exchange for losing his firt baby tooth that will undoubtedly cause him some emotional trauma since he is the drama king type.
Say, what is the going rate for a first baby tooth anyway? Should we give him money or a gift? What did you do?

I have no clue! My almost 6 year old still has ALL his baby teeth! Is that normal? ANyway, I would like to know the answer to your questions as well!
I'd say two bucks. It's our standard rate. We've gone up to $5 on the older kids.
Of course, I say that, and my son Jaxon currently has FIVE loose teeth. Looks like it's time for that re-mortgaging...
$20.00 is what the tooth fairy brought our oldest for her first tooth. After that, whatever change happened to be lying around.
I gave my girls $10 for the first and I still can't believe I gave them that much! jOHN M. might get $1 if he's lucky!
Wow, I guess the tooth fairy at our house is cheap. LOL Grandma (A.K.A. The Tooth Fairy's Assistant) Made a Tooth Shaped Pillow with a little pocket to put future teeth in and he got $1.00. I didn't want to do extra on the 1st tooth in fear he would be disappointed on the 2nd.
I always got a quarter!
With my oldest he got $5 for his first. I wish I was my mom! I got change for mine.
We gave my step-son $2.00 when he lost a tooth at our house.
I have a friend who, in addition to giving money, printed a note to her daughter from the tooth fairy. She used the smallest font she could on the computer, and cut the note so it was very tiny. The girl and the tooth fairy exchanged notes for a while, playing little games like Tic Tac Toe. It was adorable, because the little girl was so proud to tell people the tooth fairy was her very good friend.
wow $20.00? There is such a big difference in response here from one quarter to $20.00. It seems like everyone is doing money only under the pillow. He hasn't lost his tooth yet thankfully. We rarely keep cash and I dont think I check under his pillow lol would be such a good idea. I'll have to run and get some cash today.
I think I'll do $5 and some change. He likes quarters. Plus I'm sure he will start losing his teeth left and right and we'll be poor if I do more than that. :)
Thanks for all the suggestions. They were great!
My 6 year old just lost her first tooth last night and the Tooth fairy left her 4 quarters.
