Yes, College Is Important!!!

Last night I was playing Spongebob Life with my 5 year old and we got to the part where you choose a career. He picked two cards and was supposed to be able to choose from both of them, however, he did not choose the college path early on in the game so he had to take the groundskeeper job.

An opportunity was presented for me to talk about the importance of going to college (yeah, I know he's five but the sooner he understands the better, right?). He seemed to understand quite well and was quite excited about it too. He then said, "You mean you can be ANYTHING if you go to college?" I said,"Yes!". Then he said he wanted to play again so that he can go to college this time around. I hope that enthusiam for college continues for the next 12 years. I know we will do all we can to make sure he understands just how important college really is and that it's not just about the good paying job but being educated and informed as well. We want him to feel like he can be anything!

Have you talked to your young kids about college yet? What age do you think is appropriate or not appropriate?

**I'd also like to share that Leslie of MyMommysplace.com interviewed me and the interview is up over at her site. Thanks Leslie!

I don't think it's ever too early. Julia is only 2 1/2 and while we haven't sat down to discuss her options after high school, we do talk about college casually. For instance, when she says something about when she's grown up she'll do this or that, we'll say, "Yeah, after college you might do this or that." We talk as if it is a given that she'll go.

Thank you once again for the interview!

I agree it is never to early to teach the importance of college!

Agreed- as soon as they are old enough to listen. I didn't go to college and I'm happy with my life, but I think it was pure luck- I have a great job with my stepdad and Tim is working his way up from the bottom- so I don't want her to think we can all just basically "get lucky" if we don't go to college. I want her to realize chances are, she'll turn out to be a groundskeeper, or that the path to the top will be much bumpier if she doesn't do the college thing.

I guess kids should know as earlier as possible what they should do when they will grow old...It is nothing wrong with that!
