Our New (Kinda) Home

We are moving to a very small rural town in the next week or so. It's the place where my husband grew up and where his parents currently live. We are at a point in our lives where we want to be closer to family even if it means being a part of a backwards community that is stuck 30 years in the past. Seriously, we are lucky we have access to DSL but that's about it. The nearest Wal-mart, McDonalds and other necessary stores are around an hour away. I guess we'd better stock up now. ;) Hello, UPS man. I'm sure he will get tired of seeing me every day.

Our house is on the same property as Hot Daddy's parents so I've half-jokingly said to the in-laws in the past few weeks that our boys can just move in with them while Hot Daddy and I live the child-less life again. ;)

Realistically, though, moving back home will allow us to focus more on our online businesses/education because we do have access to family & friends helping out throughout the week. And, speaking of friends, we will actually be able to go out again which is something we haven't done much of in the past 2 years.

It's a good thing that our boys adore their grandparents. Who doesn't love people that are at your every "beck and call"? They have their very own concierge. LOL.

Here is a photo to show you just how rural we are. We are literally in between two hills. It's beautiful where we are moving to but Hot Daddy and I always said we'd never move back home. That is, until we had kids and saw how much they love it here. They don't even care that we are in the middle of nowhere. All they see is the beauty of the trees, mountains, and dirt!

You wanna know the hard part in all of this?

Explaining to the community and our family what we do for a living. They don't quite get making a living from websites/blogging. Sometimes I think they think I'm into some crazy stuff when I tell them I work from home and make money online.

Maybe I should start talking to them about Twitter? I'm thinking the people that follow me on Twitter outnumber the people that live in our tiny town. I'm also thinking that no one where we are moving to has even heard of Twitter. Sad or Safe?

I've also been thinking a lot about how living in an even smaller town where people know me will make blogging awkward. Will I change how and what I write about? If you are small town blogger I'd love to hear about how you deal with it.

As I just twittered to you I live in a small town of 400 people in rural Mississippi. This is not my home town, but I am 14 miles away from it. Here where I live there are no grocery stores or walmarts here in my town. We do have a Dollar General and a couple of gas stations. I drive 14 miles to a regular Walmart 20-25 miles to a super-center. I needless to say grocery shop once every week - week and a half. I menu plan and plan ahead to go "into the big town". As for my blogging and my online business. No one in my town knows that I actually "Work from home" or if they do I don't think that they believe me. They think I'm a Stay at home mom who occasionally writes an article in a magazine (because I have a local column) and occasionally speaks in churches. They don't realize anything about my thriving writing biz online where I provide articles and content for dozens of online entrepreneurs from here to Canada. Nor do they have a CLUE what Twitter is, so honestly since they don't know I don't say much about it. What they don't know won't hurt them. I still blog my feelings, thoughts and opinions. Most of my friends don't have "time" for online stuff, or so they say, so I'm all alone in this, which is why I love the online communities and the friends I've made. You will be fine!
Oh and I live in my in-laws back yard and they are my children's concierge as you say and my kids love it and so do I.

Considering we are moving, I'm not sure where to claim I am blogging from - but I'm know my family doesn't know about blogging or twitter or any of that. Most of the people I know in real life think myspace is cool and the best place to be online - so that says a lot I think!

I kind of like it because I have a community online that I love being a part of - and I don't want to spend time explaining it to my family/friends. I like being able to separate the two I suppose.

We live in Durango, Colorado, and while Durango is fairly big town, we live in the middle of nowhere at the mountains. Almost all our neighbours have horses in the front lawn, but we just enjoy the wildlife like geese, bears, deers, elks, bunnies and all the other visiting animals in our yard.

The closest mall with GAP, Gymboree or Victoria's Secret is over 3 hours away, and I don't really miss shopping. Actually I've become even better online shopper, and it just has made my blogging easier!

ONE person in my real life knows something about blogging and twitter, rest of them do not know the world excists. It's ok though, in a way it's easy, I'm not presured to do face-to-face marketing.

Only thing missing really is the face-to-face marketing opportunities lacking.

In 1993, I moved from a midwestern metropolitan area of over 5 million people to a small desert town of around 10,000. I had heard of culture shock before, but that was where I got a real good taste of the real meaning.

I learned a lot.

Good luck on your move, enjoy your new adventure.

I live in a very small town, too. It's rural and I love it! We have to drive a little farther for conveniences like Wal-Mart, McDonalds and all that, but I enjoy the peace and the freedom Julia has to run and play outside, all while being on our own property.

As for the internet and blogging and making money on-line, I haven't really shared that with my neighbors. All it took was the neighbor who came to ask about the satellite we were having installed to get high-speed internet to refer to the computer as a "devil machine" for me to know that a lot of people in town probably wouldn't get it. That's okay with me, though. I've managed to find a great group of moms (our playgroup) that are educated and aware. Most of them live in the next town over (where the Wal-Mart and McDonald's are), but they're close enough to help keep me sane. And it's kind of nice to be able to walk out of the house and really get away from the "work." Living in the sticks makes that possible.

I never thought I'd enjoy living with my parents, but after having Julia, my perspective changed. I love having them nearby.

Good luck to you with your move! I hope all goes well.

Sounds like you're moving to where I already live! We do have a Wal-Mart, and McDonald's though. And a BK. Woo-hoo! It's a great place to raise kids though. Good luck!

If you want a WalMart, you can have one of ours. I never shop there. :)
But seriously, the place looks lovely.

I wish you luck in your new move. Personally I can not even consider the thoughts of being out in the middle of nowhere. If I need to go more than 50 feet to the corner store, it is too rural for me.

I don't even want to think about the gas involved when you start having to transport the kiddies to and from activities later! Yikes.

But family... yeah, not so bad to have around... most of the time. :)

JayMonster...maybe I wasn't totally up front with how rural we are.;)We have a small grocery store about 3 minutes away. Schools and other places are about 10 minutes away but we homeschool so the location of the school is irrelevant to us right now. It's not rural as in farmland or anything like that. There are houses all around. More than anything, there is a small town mentality and a feeling of isolation from the outside world. ;) Ever been to rural appalachia?

Oh, that is my dream! Well, maybe not an hour from walmart but out in the country. lol It looks beautiful. I love the idea of being on lots of land with farm animals, hubbs at home, homeschooling the kids!

This is so funny. I can relate since both my husband and I come from very small towns in Ohio. When he was Day trading it was hard to explain...both our towns have come a long way, and are families are still there, but man, can't imagine going back. Our job now is to get the parents to come closer to us :) kudos to you for making the move..family by far, is the our biggest priority too...but it is nice to be walking distance from CoffeeBean :)

btw, how did you start making money from your blog? I've started into this blogging world for fun, and now I'm finding out more about blogs that actually make money. How do you start if you don't mind me asking.

Living in a small town where cows out number people is boring at times, but my children live only three miles from their grandparents. It makes life a little easier for my husband and I. We drop the kids off for adult time, and feel very safe knowing our children are well taken care of. I know you are going to be happier with the confidence that you can depend on love ones to help with kiddie's. So what if the UPS man going to be at your beck and call. You are going to love it! Good Luck!
