Planning Our Grade 1 Curriculum

Since grade 1 will be our first full year of homeschooling, we are going to stick to the public school calendar. This means that the school year will be arriving in less than 6 weeks. So, I'm frantically searching for the perfect grade 1 curriculum right this minute. However, I am not looking for a pre-packaged curriculum. For one, those are too expensive and two, I don't think it would work well for Future Bam's learning style.

For the second half of kindergarten this past year (we pulled our son out of public school after Xmas break) we used a mix of workbooks, online resources, games, and daily life experiences to complete the school year. Basically, we used the eclectic approach and I want to continue doing that for most subjects. However, for 1st grade I also want to be somewhat more structured so we are purchasing a textbook/workbook for each required subject just to have some guidelines to go by.

My dilemma now is that I need recommendations on good affordable textbooks, workbooks, games, & manipulatives. What should I buy? Do you recommend buying a textbook that is outdated by 5 years? What is the best textbook for our learning style?

I'd also like to hear your recommendations on the best homeschooling blogs out there that also provide great learning resources. I've yet to find a homeschooling blog that really suits us but I'm convinced one is out there so feel free to share with me your favorites. I will check each and every one of them out personally.

I agree, totally overwhelming. That's why I stick with the eclectic approach. There's just too much out there. Good luck! Be sure to post when you find good stuff!

If you find a homeschooling blog or two that is written by someone with young kids like that, be sure to post them! I've been reading ones written by people homeschooling for ten years - which is good because they know what they are doing and I agree with how they are doing it!

We've been doing the eclectic approach too. And rather then putting the kids into public school this fall like we planned, I *think* we are going to homeschool again.

So awesome. Deep down inside, when my two year-old is of age, I'd LOVE to homeschool!

What exactly do we use - I like the evan moor workbooks. Plus real life daily activities. My daughter (2nd grade this fall) loves workbooks (as I did as a child, okay I still do) but my son (kindergarten this year) is way more hands on then her.

I'm always looking for more ideas though.

My problem has always been keeping track of what we are doing - portfolios work so much better for me then a weekly planner.

For reading, I recommend books, books, and more books. An older textbook is fine for a guideline, but supplement it with real literature. You local librarian can help. Another good resource would be looking into a teachers' guide by Fountas and Pinnell; they have fantastic lists of books by title and reading level.
Good luck! You seem to have the right attitude for homeschooling.

I use Dr Ed Hirsch's "what your 1st grader needs to know, "What your second grader needs to know." etc. They're inexpensive, so comprehensive, great scope and sequence (threw that in there so you'd know that I know what I'm talking about) and are divided into 6 subjects. You do a bit from each subject each day. So fun, full of games, and 100% covers all they need to know. I have schooled at home my 13 yr old,my 11 yr old, and now my 6 yr old 1st grader.
