The Ice Cream Truck Crisis
I used to like the ice cream truck. Now, not so much.
Our boys were first introduced to the Ice Cream Truck just last year when we moved back home to where my husband and I grew up. At first I thought it was fun for them but now that Baby Picasso, our 4 yr old son, has been put on a more restricted diet due to his EE I am constantly trying to avert a crisis when the Ice Cream music starts to play. FYI, If you don't know what EE is you can read more here, Living With Eosinophilic Esophagitis )
Yesterday, our boys were playing a baseball game and here comes the ice cream truck. Literally every kid ran off the field with a gleam in their eye - my kids included. But I had to tell mine "no" while most of the other children devoured their yummy treat. I even had to tell my 8 year old he couldn't have ice cream because his brother wasn't able to eat it. I felt like the most horrible Mom.
So, I've had enough of the ice cream truck. I want it to be banned from baseball games unless it carries corn-syrup free icees or organic ricecream - which will NEVER happen. I want it to forever stop coming by our home. I want the truck engine to blow up beyond repair. I want the music box to break because the sound instantly breaks my heart. And honestly - I Hope The Ice Cream Truck Gets The Freakin' Swine Flu.
I'm just so tired of all this heartache...and it's making me bitter.Labels: EE, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, ice cream truck

I was lactose intolerant as a kid and have memories of not being able to eat ice cream while the others did. My mom would keep popsicles stocked in the freezer so when others were eating ice cream, I wouldn't feel so left out.
Hard to do at the baseball game, but could you do that for home?
We do have "special" ice cream at home for him that I mentioned above - icees that are pure sugar and ice as well as rice cream which is ice cream made out of rice milk. When is someone going to run an organic ice cream truck? ;)
It's the baseball timing that I'm upset over. They don't need to be there during baseball games - not only b/c my son can't have but b/c other kids don't have money to buy it as well.
Oh, poor baby! I wonder why they don't consider carrying a few of the bars which you mentioned. It makes perfect sense to me.
Hope you are doing well!

I know what you mean. We don't have dietary restrictions in my family, but while I allow my kids their fair share of junk food, I try and avoid things that are entirely artificial which eliminates a good portion of what the ice cream man sells. Not to mention, most of the portions could feed a family of 4. So we do occasionally indulge and get a treat from the ice cream truck, but we limit what they can choose, and they know it's a rare treat.
Mine has food restrictions because his pediatrician, only he wants all these things: strawberries, icecream, chocolate. It rips my heart refusing him all that; how can you deal with that?
You are not alone!
My children don't HAVE to stay away from sweets, but myself and my boys suffer with candida and sweets make it worse so I try to stay away from them. And the icecream truck is the bane of my existence! Not to mention the creepy ass men that are always driving them!
