Dyslexia Too???

Yesterday my almost 5 year old came to me and said, "Look Mommy, I wrote my numbers". Here's what he showed me:

I wrote the correct numbers above his numbers to show him how they should have looked. He wrote numbers 5,6, 8 & 9 correctly. And, now I'm worried that he is dyslexic. I looked up some of the signs of dyslexia. It seems as if he does exhibit a few of those signs but you know what? So Do I. Maybe I'm dyslexic. Maybe Google is turning us all into hypochondriacs.

It's possible that he is just learning how to write, right? Should I be worried?

No Worries! May daughter is in 2nd grade...last day of 2nd grade was today. She wrote most of her #s and some of her letters like that until after Christmas of this year. She still slips up on Ps and Bs sometimes. The teachers say it's normal.

I think dyslexic children can not put things in order or have trouble from reading left to right. You're photo clearly shows he can put things in the correct order and from left to right perfectly. They just don't understand that the direction of the letter matters. I would try to tell him that it has to "point in --> direction to see if that helps.

He's fine!!! :)

ok so by the direction of the letter or number I mean, for example, he might confuse b and d. not understanding that there is a difference. kwim?

I wouldn't worry yet. My son will start kindergarden this fall & still turns some letters/numbers around, & his preschool is fairly intensive on letter learning. If he's starting kindergarden this fall, his teacher should catch it if she thinks it will be a problem & you can always voice it as a concern to her, so that she'll keep it in mind when working w/him.

Dee... thanks.

Kate...thanks for clearing that up.

Susan.. We will be homeschooling him but since he will just be turning 5 at the end of this month I think we are going to wait till next year for kindergarten. Doing a year of home preschool this year.

I am no expert, but my 5 year old does similar things sometimes and I'm not worried. His therapist/teachers for preschool weren't either. BUT, Mama's always know best... so if you're worried maybe you should follow your instinct.

I have been studying dyslexia a TON as my 7 year old we just found out has it, and my hubby as well... Writing numbers backwards is normal at this age. However, if he exhibits SEVERAL symptoms... it may be worth looking into. This is the best site for info.: http://www.dys-add.com/ Check out the symptoms and watch the videos on that main page. You will probably recognize right away if he does or does not have it. If you want to chat more, let me know!

I teach kindergarten and have kids write numbers backwards allll the time, it is a developmental skill and not something to worry about until after 2nd grade...just my 2 cents.
