Twelve Top FREE iPhone/iTouch Apps for Kids According To My 6 YR Old

6yroldwithiphoneOur youngest son fell in love with the iPhone as soon as he realized he could do so many things with it. He got an iPhone for his 6th birthday (yeah, I know that’s a young age for such an expensive gift but it’s really no different than a Leapster, Nintendo DS, Xbox, or Playstation). A few months later his iPhone was stolen at the beach. He was heartbroken so we surprised him with the newest Apple iPod touch (most similar to the iPhone) this past Christmas.

We’ve been trying out and playing with lots of cool applications as of late so we wanted to share our 6 year old son’s current all time favorite completely FREE apps for kids ages 5 and up with you. We started out with his list of five then went to ten and now we have twelve. Six year olds are a bit indecisive. ;)

1. Facetime - Allows you to video chat with other facetime users. He loves to call his cousins who lives hours away. Comes installed on the newest iPod touch and iPhone 4.

2. Doodle Buddy - With this artsy application you can doodle, draw, decorate your photos, and design many things.  This app keeps kids busy for a while.

3. Bounce On - Who doesn’t like playing with balls? Mario inspired game but with balls as the character :)

Photography Series: Buying Your First DSLR

babyboyuriportraitContrary to popular belief you can get decent photos from point and shoot cameras. You can even apply tips I plan on sharing here with a P&S camera but if you really want to get better at photographing your baby or kids then I suggest you make the upgrade to a DSLR camera.

Now some of you may be wondering what is a DSLR camera? Simply put, a DSLR is a digital single lens reflex camera that allows you to take better, more professional looking photos, and these days DSLR’s are much more affordable than you’d ever think possible.

Now that you know what a DSLR is, you need to decide which one is right for you. For this post I’m going to focus on the mostly beginner/entry level DSLR’s only. Since Nikon and Canon dominate the camera market,  I’m going to focus on these two brands. Below you will see a list of the 4 first best DSLR cameras to buy. Remember, these are MY recommendations as a photographer and Mother on a budget. :)
