5 Simple Tips To Save Money On Holiday Road Trips

makemoney11Every year millions of people travel by car during the holidays.  This year many more families are expected to travel during the holidays. Here are 5 simple tips on saving money during your holiday car travel.

1. Shop around for the best gas prices. Look at gasbuddy.com to see where gas is cheapest in  your area. Additionally, fill up your tank at least 2-3 days before the holiday because gas is almost always more expensive on the day of the holiday.

2. Check your tire pressure, oil, and remove unnecessary items from your trunk to get the most out of your gas mileage.

3. Pack your own lunch. It’s usually cheaper and much healthier than going through a fast food restaurant. However, if you simply must eat out go where kids eat free. Here’s a cool website called Kids Eat For where you just punch in your zip code and they will give you every local restaurant where kids eat free. You can also get the Kids Eat For app for your iPhone.

4. Don’t buy snacks at gas station/convenience stores. You could pay up to $1.99 for a candy bar that is normally 50 cents elsewhere. Instead, pack your own snacks.

5. Stay with family members rather than a hotel. Of course if staying with family is just not feasible then check out Expedia.com for some good hotel deals.

Happy Holidays! Please feel free to share your holiday road trip tips with us here in the comments!

Thanks so much for the heads up on gasbuddy! We usually stop at the rest stop and it’s so bloody expensive. We’ll probably save a lot of money your way. One other thing I would add to the list: rather than spend money on books, toys and activities for the kids, we visit the library first and then I print off a bunch of activities from the internet. Good source for printables here: http://www.schoolfamily.com/print-and-use-tools
