Easy Kentucky-Style Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe
I grew up eating fried green tomatoes here in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, and I still love eating them today. My 9 year old enjoys them too and I love that I can share something from my childhood with him.
If you want a tasty and super easy authentic fried green tomato recipe then this one is for you.
Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe
Ingredients:
2 non-ripe medium green tomatoes
1/2 cup egg whites ( I use the egg whites/egg beaters you pour from a carton because it’s easier)
salt & pepper ( to taste)
1/2 cup sweet cornmeal
1/4 cup flour
Directions:
1. Pre - heat the oil on the stove in a shallow frying pan. I use canola oil or peanut oil. Olive oil gives them a weird flavor plus it burns at high temps so I don’t recommend Olive oil.
2. slice up the tomatoes
3. mix the corn meal, salt n pepper, and flour in a long shallow bowl
4. quickly dip the tomato slices in the egg whites liquid
5. take the tomato slices out of the liquid and roll them in the cornmeal/flour mix.
6. Put covered tomato slices in frying pan and fry on each side until crispy golden brown or about 2-3 mins each side.
7. Take out and drain on paper towel. Enjoy alone or with ranch dressing!
FYI: Fried green tomatoes taste best when they are hot and served with a side of cornbread!

You know I used to fry them in lard. They tasted just as good. Maybe not good for you, but if you only eat a few per summer I don’t think they’ll hurt you.
