Salt Dough Halloween Ornament Craft + Recipe

saltdoughcraftWhen Halloween draws near we go crazy with arts and crafts. Today my boys and I decided to try out a salt dough craft idea we had seen elsewhere since we already had all ingredients on hand.  So we got out our Wilton cookie cutters and dove right in!

Complete directions for the salt dough and how to decorate them are included below.

What You Need to Complete the Salt Dough Halloween Ornament Craft:

1 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup regular salt

1/2 cup water

cookie cutters

toothpicks or fork

markers or acrylic paint

rolling pin to roll dough

large bowl

mixing spoons

Salt Dough Recipe Directions:

Mix flour, salt, and water together in the large bowl. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.  Knead the dough so that it is smooth then roll it out to about a half inch thick. You may have to adjust the dough to more or less water and flour. Then use cookie cutters to make the shapes you want. We used all Halloween themed shapes from our cookie cutter set. If you want patterns or textures in your shapes do this before baking with toothpicks or forks.  You will also need to poke a hole at the top of the dough if you want to use it as an ornament.

Salt Dough Ornaments Halloween Decoration Ideas:

Once you have created all of the shapes you want, place them in the oven for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Once the dough shapes  are completely hardened remove them from the oven and let them cool for about 1 to 2 hours before decorating. There are no instructions or limits as to what you can use for decorations on your cookie cutter ornaments. We used markers and googley eyes this time around as you can see from the photo above.

Above all have fun and let the kids get messy!
