Seven Awesome Photography Learning Sites For Moms
I’ve been a fan of photography for as long as I can remember. However, once I became a Mother the photography bug really bit me! I bought a Nikon digital SLR camera in 2006 and haven’t stopped learning and creating art since. I’m in love with and totally passionate about creating artistic portraits of my children and my clients. Yes, I’m a part time photographer too …in addition to owning and editing here!
There are many sites out there that can help you get started with learning how to take better portraits but the ones I’m going to mention are the ones I’ve either really learned a lot from or was very inspired by, and most recommend. Above all I suggest reading through these sites and apply what you’ve read. Then practice practice practice!
Digital Photography School
DPS by Problogger Owner Darren Rouse has been one of the most informative sites I’ve visited for learning the technical aspect of photography. At DPS you can learn all about equipment, post production tips, what those buttons on your camera really mean such as aperature, ISO, and exposure, and so much more! Above all if you want to learn how to improve your photography skills this is the site for you.
Mpix
Mpix is actually a site that sells portrait prints to photography professionals. However, the Mpix forum is an excellent resource for ideas, poses, backgrounds, photography business ideas, critiques, and more! I recommend this site once you learn some basic photography skills and are ready to move on to professional photography.
Shutter Sisters
This site is a community of women who share the same passion -photography. Shutter Sisters is an inspirational site and can really help get your creative juices flowing with all the amazing photos and projects they feature. This site focuses on sharing beautiful photos rather than teaching how to use your camera. It’s still an awesome must have resource for beginners and pros alike.
flickr
Yes, flickr is a photo uploading and sharing site. At the same time flickr is very educational. There are many many flickr groups that you can join to learn more about how particular photos are taken, lighting, posing, what equipment you need to get a certain look, and more. I recommend getting a free flickr account, upload some of your work then find and join groups which have photos that inspire you. You can learn a lot by looking at the photos settings or even asking the owner questions. I’m on flickr too!
Pioneer Woman
I dowloaded my first actions set from the Pioneer Woman. In addition to being an a-list blogger and Mom, Ree Drummond is also an amazing photographer. There is a whole section dedicated to basic photography and Photoshop tutorials ( which I’ll go into more details about in later posts) that I can honestly say I’ve learned a WHOLE lot from. If you want to take your photos from ordinary to extraordinary Ree’s photoshop action tutorials can really help you!
Ken Rockwell
First up let me tell you that Ken Rockwell is a Nikonian. Essentially he is a Nikon camera enthusiast ( as I am myself) so all of his equipment information focuses on Nikons. Howeverm his posts on how to take better pictures can be applied to anyone with any kind of camera. There are definitely some great tips in there from composition to what camera to buy to lighting techniques. I especially love this article of his, How To Learn
Iheartfaces
Iheartfaces is a new community focusing on photographing faces as well as tips, techniques, contests, and more. I’ve found myself visiting this site more and more for inspiration. It is filled with tons of amazing images from photographers from all around the world.
Next up I’ll be sharing with you some digital photography books that cover basics, poses, and lighting! A couple of months ago I shared my plans to share my own photography tips and tidbits here. This post is a first in a series that will come once every two weeks or so. If you like photography and want to learn how to take better photos of your kiddos I hope you’ll stick around.
